Portnoy’s Complaint: A guide to the filthiest and funniest Jewish novel Why Philip Roth's book is considered one of the dirtiest books ever published? He was also accused of Jewish self-hatred BOOK: PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT.   Portnoy's Complaint, however, is a book with perfect pitch. The humor and volcanic energy of an Elkin is combined with sheer readibility, accessibility, and the stench of a psyche spraying the page with candor. This is a great book. Unlabored, unforgettable, and true.5/5(5).

Portnoy's Complaint is just that - his carnal maladjustment described by his psychotherapist as a syndrome. The book is a sort of confession during Alexander Portnoy's counselling session. There is a neurotic mother with an obsession for hygiene- a closet sufferer of Munchausen's Syndrome by proxy/5().   Kate Elizabeth Russell on Judy Blume, Anne Carson, and Portnoy's Complaint 11 rapid-fire book recs from the author of My Dark Vanessa.
